Whine, whine, whine

My goodness, if my kids whined the way I did in my last post I'd certainly call them on it! I apologize for all the complaining. Blame it on the weather, the rain continues.
The house is progressing nicely and I love the color. As I am putting it back together I am also editing out and de cluttering. I do have to remind my dh that no, we do not need to keep broken things or the cassettes and player that I can't remember when it was last used!

I usually pass by reviews of baby clothes and patterns, after all I haven't had little ones for quite a while. But, now that my son and his wife are expecting!!! I have to decide whether I want to make baby things. I started looking around for cute patterns and the big 4 are sorely lacking in anything interesting.
Ottobre magazine is a big step up and BWOF has the cutest childrens things, but no baby stuff that I can remember. I probably won't make infant things; it really doesn't interest me, but when he or she gets older I may be tempted.

  1. Many years ago I sewed a lot of baby clothes for my sister-in-law. What I found fun was the ability to finish them in a short period of time, I could make them useable (lots of snaps in the legs), and I could add my own touches. That was back when I didn't have much money to spend on gifts. Yes, they outgrow them way too fast. Nowadays it seems like there are many more choices on where to buy infant clothes at reasonable prices.

  2. We all whine. You weren't so bad at all. If I were going through all the construction you are, I would not be fit to live with!

  4. It's not fair that your kids read your blog--you have no "secrets" :-)

  6. I love that my kids read my blog and comment. They are almost always supportive. I read my dd's blog and comment on hers, so turnabout is fair play.
Connie, congrats on your first grandchild! We weren't allowed to tell for a while either.

  7. Baby stuff is soooo much fun to make. Sew Beautiful magazine is great. A friend suggested a couple of others the other day in an email. I'll have to go back to it because I didn't write them down.

  9. Congrats again, Nancy, and now to Connie too. The big 4 patterns aren't that great as is but if you customize them you can come up with some cute things.

  10. BWOF does have baby things occasionally- June last year had quite a few dresses, rompers and baby overalls from size 3 months.

  12. I don't know if I'd sew baby clothes for a kid. I mean they grow so darned quickly. On the other hand, I remember a ridiculous pair of star patterned pants that my Aunt J made me (as well as a super cool matching quilted vest) that I wore for ages and loved to pieces. I think such personal clothing is a much better gift when they actually appreciate it.

...Then again I have no kids so what do I know.

  14. Congratulations! The cool thing about making clothing for small children is that it is really easy to lay everything out at once for cutting! It's not necessarily easier to sew little things, but it sure is easier to cut them out!

  15. Congratulations on the first grandchild! What a thrill and what a great excuse to sew sweet little garments. Seek out an issue of Australian Smocking and Embroidery if you need inspiration. It always works for me. Simplicity had some cute vintage patterns you may like as well.

  16. Mazel tov! This will be one well dressed cherub. I have two rules for children's clothes: (1) no juvenile prints (soccer balls, dinosaurs, crayons, etc) and (2) lux materials. A few years ago I made a cashmere coat for a toddler. Extravagent? Perhaps, but it used only a yard that was a $16 remnant.

I love sewing for my nieces, now 8 and 10..and especially when they were little. Ottobre has wonderful baby clothes and toddler clothing patterns!

(and thanks for leaving a comment on my blog about the vintage mens shirt I have "under construction" !)
