I USED A PRINT!

I actually got one of my prints cut and sewn into this terrific sweater coat.  Hot Patterns has some very nice designs for knits these days including this great  1018 Riviera Cardigan.
I've posted a complete review over on PR, though there isn't a lot to say about such a simple project.  It took me longer to match and cut it out than to sew it up.
Hot Patterns Riviera Cardigan 1018 review

The pants are a wool blend with a small amount of lycra from Emmaonesock, as is the sweater coat fabric.  I used my trusty tnt Hot Patterns Razer pant that I narrowed down to an 18" leg at the hem.  I used this method from Threads,  a much better way to narrow down a pant leg than just drawing it in narrower as many books instruct.  This one does not leave you with excess fabric below the rear end or in the thigh.
Oh, by the way, I took this with my new camera.  It has a cool setting where the self timer recognizes your face when you enter the scene. It didn't work in front of my brick fireplace wall, but it did work above.  It's meant to enable the photographer to enter a group photo and it recognizes a new face, but it worked here quite well for my purposes.    You can also set the number of pictures it will take.

Did anyone see the column in the NY Times yesterday? Altered by a Sewing Machine by Michelle Slatalla..  This is the third article I've seen recently about women who have decided to learn how to sew.  Michelle talks about learning that sewing is about process and she's all about product, though she does conclude that sewing is changing her.   I've been sewing for a lot of years and it's still about process to me.  I love the planning not only of wardrobes, but how I'm going to make something.  I make samples of techniques, even when I've done them before.  I fit as I sew and sometimes I still get surprised by the outcome.  It isn't about how fast I can make something or how cheaply I can make it.  I am not looking to save money by sewing.  I love the process of it all.  This is not to say that I don't want a great finished garment when I am done, but that isn't why I love sewing.  What about you,are you a process or product sewer?

  2. Very elegant! Love the outfit, great use of the print, combining it with the black.

I love to sew because of the process of sewing, recently I've tried a few techniques on scraps and I really like to to that, even if I'm not planning to make something with it very soon. For the inability to easily buy well fitting clothes (especially pants), there is a need for production sewing now and then, but I don't like it. That's one of the reasons the fabric for two new pants is washed and dried, but nothing more than that yet. I prefer the 'slow' sewing.

  3. What a gorgeous outfit! That print is sooooo chick! Even your necklace is perfect. Now, I gotta' go buy that pattern!

I need to sew like I need to breathe. It's about process to me, most of the time. Occasionally, there are things I really need and have to make quickly. If I buy RTW, I have to alter it, so I'd rathet just sew a garment from the beginning. I make samples too. I have a box of samples. Some I've used in garments, some not. Sewing relaxes me, takes me away. I'm not speedy, don't feel the need to whip out a garment every day or so. Also, I like the planning of a garment.

  4. Your cardigan looks great! I gotta have that pattern, too. That's good photography, also. I'm a process sewer and enjoy every bit of the process - from planning to finished garment.

  6. First can I say that I love the cardigan!

Second - I am a little of both - I love the process but there are times when I just want a product. I think anyone with some sewing experience under their belt can be a bit of both...you just choose what you want to concentrate on that day.

  7. Nancy, I just love your chic new sweater coat and it enthuses me about mine that is 98% finished. The minute I finish my holiday sewing, I will get back to my sweater coat, too.
More and more, it's the process more than the product. Sewing soothes.

  8. Fabulous outfit. It looks so elegant and expensive. I think I am a product sewer. And that is why I don't get much done. Too much processing to get to the product...lol

  11. LOVE IT! To answer your question I'm both, right now it's definitely product sewing trying to get the Christmas sewing finished but there's always that special garment that is all about the process, the most recent example would be my plaid wool short jacket.

  12. I love the coat--you look so chic in it! What a great article, too. I think I'm more process, but product too. I've only been seriously sewing clothes since my son was born 7 months ago. My simple goal has been to make each garment better than the last in one respect, and to focus on learning as much as I possibly can from each one. I've been pretty floored by how far this goal has taken me, and I'm even more excited that each garment gets a little more wearable and less homemade looking than the last.

  13. That is a beautiful coat! I'm a process person... I find the planning and finishing very calming and relaxing. Sewing mindfully helps me think clearly - very zen

Me, I evolved into a process sewer. Took some years to get there.
