Should I or Shouldn't I

Pattern seduction.  Hot Patterns sent me an e mail the other day with this reissued 'vintage' blouse pattern. It's even on sale. Is this one of those times when I love the pattern and succumb to it even if it will look like shit on me?  I really like this blouse.  I see it in lightweight summer fabrics that are perfect for, hot  humid Long Island weather.  It's loose design is perfect for that, but loose isn't necessarily my best look.   Those pleats are destined to make my bust look bigger I fear.  I even like the ties,  though I always see ties as young and again, something that adds weight to my figure.  What do you think dear reader, should I buy it or not?  If I buy it is it destined for the seduction pile that never gets made?

  1. I just worte about "pattern seduction" on my blog today too. Lots of time spent making muslins and fitting, all to a dead end. I really like the look of that Hot Pattern blouse but in the wrong fabric it could easily be the big pouff. How about sewing it in a drapey rayon knit?

  2. I think it would be great on a hot summer day. But could you do it without the ties? Would it still close enough in the front?

  3. I was tempted too, by the lure of a pattern on sale. Then, I discovered that I already have it! So, I am happy. I see it in lightweight cinkled gauze for summer. I hate to make a decision, so I usually just forge ahead and buy the thing that torments me, so I don't have stress!

  4. Sigh - There are so many patterns chattering in the sewing room begging for a try that I've been making an effort to edit more carefully prior to purchase but this one does have hot weather intrigue. I agree with you tho the tie is bugging and if this get's the go-ahead nod I'll be replacing the tie w/ a small tab and button.

  5. If you like it, make it! Loose tops are wonderful when it's hot and humid. Look at it this way, there isn't much fitting to this top, just the yoke really. I'd also be tempted to omit the ties.

  6. Heart says "yes"
    Brain says "no"

    Been there, done that.

Learned to always listen to brain.

  7. I'm going to play devil's advocate :) Will those pleats do you justice? You look, imo, fabulous in sleeker things, like my fave; the burda tunic. You can get away with loose as long as it's sleek- and bold :) I too love that blouse, and although my bust is smaller, it will not work on me. It's too romantic. Clothing isn't just about fitting lines, it's as much about our personalities. I've never met you but when I saw you in that tunic you exploded on the screen- BAM! Happy Valentines Day! Maybe you should ask DH :))

  8. I love that pattern, too, and I own it. Maybe there is something about the drawings that make it irresistable.
Maybe if you used a very sheer fabric and wore it over a sleek base layer, it would work?

  9. Only if you can get it to work for you. In a very soft flowing fabric I would imagine it to be fine. And you could leave the ties off and fasten at the neckline.

  10. Please let us know what you decide to do. I'm debating about that pattern myself. There's something about the lure of a sale. I do think that it would look great in the right fabric, but I don't think that it is typical of your style.

  11. Mom, that shirt would be perfect if you and I didn't have huge ass boobs. It's going to hang from the boobs and add 20 pounds because it won't flatter the figure right. Cute top, cute as hell but even I wouldn't rock that. Definitely designed for an A cup.

  13. I say get a dark colored linen and go for it. The linen will be comfortable, the dark color will de emphasize the boobs, and you will just looks so cool tooling around the hamptons in that in a navy blue linen and white linen pants. You can do this!

  14. Just wanted to add, sometimes you just have to be summery.

  15. Sounds like it's too late now - but I made this pattern (the original) a few years ago in a botanical print silk. I get more compliments on this blouse than anything I've ever made. The fabric selection is key - you wouldn't want anything stiff, something soft with a good drape. You would want the tie as, at least on me, the neckline is a bit low and the tie covers up a bit of cleavage. But as you say, if it's not your style, it's not your style.

  16. I have the original issue of this pattern, and though I really like it, I had to make a lot of tweaks to it. For one, the sleeves are for someone with anorexic arms. Another problem, the lines for the pleats on the back are wrong. With the center seam, it is impossible to make the pleats look like the ones on the line drawing unless you change the way you cut out the back pieces. I made it in muslin to see how it would fit, and ended up making it sleeveless. I still wear the muslin around the house because it is cute and comfortable, although not very flattering. I've been thinking about attempting it again in a better fabric and longer length. I would still need to redraft the sleeves. As for "boobage" I think I did a pivot and slide FBA (I wear a DD) and it actually looks fine. Its definitely a "weekend" style and nothing you would wear to work.
