I opened my email this morning from Keep it Chic and saw this very chic woman wearing a rain bonnet. I haven't seen one of these since I was a teen maybe? I know my mother wore these and I wouldn't be caught dead in one of these. Except when I am caught in the rain without an umbrella or I don't really want to carry one anyway. When you don't have a free hand a rain hat certainly would be welcome. I've thought of making one for myself but I never have. I don't mind being out in a mist, after all here in the suburbs I only have to go from the house to the car or car to store and my hair is curly so mist usually doesn't do all that much damage. But in a downpour who wants to look like a bedraggled rat? Do any of you wear rain bonnets these days? What do you wear in the rain?

I always keep a keen eye on the weather forecast, and if there's the slightest chance of rain I either carry an umbrella or wear a coat/jacket with a hood. Like you I would not be caught dead in a rain bonnet!
ReplyDeleteI like umbrellas or a hooded jacket if I'm walking my dog. I think a young model could pull it off but in real life you would just look suuuuuuuper weird. It's a plastic babushka!
ReplyDeleteNot a fan of the rain bonnet, but you've got me thinking... Now that I live in Seattle, some sort of cute/funky rain hat would be great for walking the dog when it's raining--I hate carrying an umbrella while I'm out walking her.
ReplyDeleteMy hair only curls if there is rain coming so I wouldn't wear one of those plastics doohickeys.
ReplyDeleteI remember rain bonnets! And all I can say is YUCK!!! They don't really keep anything dry except your hair and even then only if it's short. They were really invented for those highly curled, backcombed and hair-sprayed hairstyles of the last century that would melt if they got damp.
ReplyDeletePersonally I love my beautiful locally-made umbrella and my water resistant Sewaholic Minoru jacket for the rain. Which happens a lot around here. And even then I can still get wet through sometimes.
OMG that was a laugh to see. I'm with you, Nancy, would not be caught in public in one. Hooded rain jacket, sure, but I'd rather be bedraggled than do that one ever again. Wonder where they located one, some hoarder's collection?
ReplyDeleteReal Oregonians never carry umbrellas so all of my coats and jackets have hoods. Those rain bonnets are still worn around here by elderly ladies.....I have no idea where they buy them!
ReplyDelete(And what's with those pants she's wearing?)
At first I thought the post was about those weird crotch pants as well!
DeleteI live in the rural Deep South and elderly women here wear them. I've seen them in Wal-Mart, along with those sleep caps. No way I'd put one on, mist or downpour! LOL
ReplyDeleteMy first thought when seeing the picture wasn't of her head, but her pants. Seriously fugly.
Oh, my, the memories. We were required to always have a rain hat folded up in one of those tiny plastic pouches they came in. This was the rule at the grammar school I attended. You couldn't pay me to wear one now but they do make a lot of sense. I will keep lugging my umbrella, no matter the trend.
ReplyDeleteI'm of a certain age that well remembers those ugly plastic bonnets. I, too, was required to carry one in my purse but didn't ever use it and certainly wouldn't use one now. I always have a hooded rain jacket with me when there's a chance of rain. This style rain bonnet should never come back!!!
ReplyDeleteI keep a small umbrella in the car but a few times I would have been happy to have a bonnet in my purse . A bonnet isn't all that cute but neither is a drowned river rat when making a run for the car. Who's looking anyway when you're getting a shower and running?
ReplyDeleteI carry a small umbrella in my briefcase. I would NEVER wear a rain bonnet, if my life depended on it! Australian rain style includes the plastic rain poncho, which I always take to the football (umbrellas don't do in the stadium)
ReplyDeleteWhy Not? they are quite practical!!??

ReplyDeleteGail, for mine those plastic ponchos are the absolute dregs. they're completely useless, I wouldn't be caught dead in one. When I can't use the brolly, such as when I'm watching the football, I have a full -length nylon raincoat (just like I wore at high school, only red instead of navy blue) and an old Coles concertina rain hat, both of which I bought at least five years ago from a Salvos shop at a total cost of $2. They do the job perfectly well, and look infinitely better than one of those oversized (and overpriced) sandwich wrappers ever will.
ReplyDeleteRain bonnets are very practical rainwear to just put on when to and from the car , and I have worn them for just over four years. I am a guy , and hats and caps are not much good when it is raining and windy. It is the same when wearing a coat with a hood , if the wind catches the hood it blows it straight back over your head. And unlike hats and caps they do not mess up your hair. I wear one that is clear with black trim and has a visor , and extends over your coat collar stopping rain from going down your neck.. There is nothing to beat them for keeping you dry , I just think to myself this is 2014 and not the 1950s.
ReplyDeleteEw, no! Rain bonnets are for old ladies. Fashion mags want to get us wearing all kind of nutty things, but rain bonnets ... ! A nice silk scarf on a misty day, though still a mature look, can still be very striking and stylish.
