A Sad Week

Mr Nicky, our 18 year old dog died last week.  He was really fading that last week or so but he was a great dog to the end.  We got him when he was 6 months old right after our son's bar mitzvah.  Our daughter Alex was 6 years old; they grew up together. He was very popular with the girls in her dorm when we brought him  with us to visit Alex both at boarding school and college and she was of course thrilled.  She lavished attention on him when she was home last fall between contracts.  He'd gotten crotchety in his old age, but he let Alex pet him and hold him while  he was intolerant of our attentions.  She kept hoping that he'd last till she came home from Korea this December,  but that was asking too much of him.   I keep looking for him when I walk through rooms.
On top of that, I put my back out yesterday.  Not the worst I've had, but not great.  I am doing my back exercises and taking it easy.

I have gotten some sewing done and I'll get to that in my next post.  Pants that fit. Finally.

  9. It's so hard to lose a pet. I cannot imagine after 18 years! My brother and sister-and-law had to put down their beloved lab several months ago. She was 16. My nephew drove to the vet with Hannah (the dog) and my brother, of course, both crying the whole way. My nephew HAD NOT YET been born when my brother got Hannah. Amazing how much lives change in the lifespan of a beloved pet. Take care.

  10. Nancy, I am so sorry about your family losing Nicky. I know how you feel. I lost one a couple years ago and he was almost 16. I have one left and she is 17 years+. They are our children and part of our families and lives. I certainly hope your back feels better as well. Cheers!

  15. Oh Mommy, it never rains but when it pours. It's so hard realizing that he won't be there when I get home in December. Lots of love to you and our beloved Mr. Nicky.

And my goodness, I hope your back gets better soon! Too bad you aren't in Korea where acupuncture and massages are affordable.

  17. I'm sorry to hear about that. What a great old friend, but it sounds like he lived a good, long, and very happy life and a dog really can't ask for anything more...

  20. Pets are such an important part of our lives. I don't know what I would do with my little buddy, Siggy. I've had a dog for as long as I can remember and wouldn't dream of not having one. You know they do make you live longer!

  21. Oh, this makes me sad for you and Alex. Even though you know it's time and it's best, your heart still breaks when you have to say goodbye to a beloved pet. I still miss my late cat (who lived to be 19) every day.

  24. I read your post with my two dogs, one of whom is definitely showing signs of old age at my feet, and I shed a tear. I am so sorry to hear of your loss.

  26. I'm so sorry to hear about Mr. Nicky. 18 is a good old age for a dog, but not for a member of the family. I'm sorry as well that Alex wasn't there to say goodbye. Hugs to you all - it's such a difficult time, even when it's for the best.
