Can't Believe I Haven't Mentioned This

Kenneth King is teaching his moulage class in  Queens, at Sew Right Sewing Machines  and I am signed up to take it!  I muddle along altering patterns to fit and I am hoping that a moulage and subsequent sloper will help me not only alter commercial patterns  but be the start of drafting my own patterns.  He says that he really doesn't have much advice on altering patterns from a sloper because he drafts all his own patterns but he recommends Lynn Maynard's DVD on fitting for this.  Pattern Review has it available I believe and if you are  a PR member you get a discount on purchases from the site.  The class is on 3 consecutive Sundays in February and March .  It's  a bit shorter commute than NYC  for me where he has offered other classes.  I'm excited to not only take the class from KK, but I always relish the opportunity to meet other garment sewers in person.

He is also teaching a skirt drafting class this month, but one class at a time and honestly, I can draft a skirt by myself with a set of instructions.  The moulage is more complicated and we will work in teams of two for measuring each other. I have his moulage book but I've never gotten further than printing it out.  My dh is notoriously bad at taking accurate measurements.  I am also hoping that I can use the skintight moulage we sew up to refit my duct tape dress form that has never been perfect and time and gravity have lowered the bust to make it really unusable.

The class comes with great reviews and to meet KK?  I can't wait.

  1. How happy for you! That IS truly exciting. It is a delight to meet and learn from others, particularly ones that we usually only see in books or magazines. I had a class from Susan Khalje last summer. It was wonderful!

  3. Looking forward to your thoughts on the moulage, the class, etc.
I bet you will have a wonderful time. When I have seen photos from moulage classes, all of the students seem to have perfectly fitted slopers and it's pretty impressive!
I also want to get my hands on that Lynda Maynard book. It was on my Christmas wish list, but alas, that is where it remains.

  7. I have Lynda's book and it is FABULOUS. Once you have the sloper, you'll be intrigued where it takes you. Enjoy the class.

  8. My sewing group did the moulage using KK's book, and I got mine finished. I actually did zip it onto my old Uniquely You (foam rubber) dress form and reduced and rearranged the padding out to suit. Am just using it now for the first pattern fitting. Seems to be pretty accurate.

    Have a great time!

  11. What fun. You will enjoy the class and find your sloper immensely helpful. I also recommend Lynda's book. I ordered it through a link on Kenneth's website. It was listed under Books. There is also an article by Karen Howland on using your sloper to simplify the fitting process of commercial patterns in Threads magazine #79, pp. 48-52. It is available on the Threads magazine website.

  13. Any time you can spend time with a true artist and a wonderful technician in the field is a blast. But what you will discover about Kenneth is that he is amazingly sharing. I was so struck by this, and begin to realize that true artists are sharing cause they have so many ideas bouncing around in their heads, that they can't do them all, and like "cleaning house" every once in a while! Can't wait to hear (and see) the report.
